{"id":10987,"date":"2019-12-18T00:10:25","date_gmt":"2019-12-18T00:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lawfoundation.org.nz\/?p=10987"},"modified":"2019-12-18T19:45:31","modified_gmt":"2019-12-18T19:45:31","slug":"new-publication-childrens-rights-in-aotearoa-new-zealand-reflections-on-the-30th-anniversary-of-the-convention-on-the-rights-of-the-child","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lawfoundation.org.nz\/?p=10987","title":{"rendered":"*New publication &#8211;  Children&#8217;s Rights in Aotearoa New Zealand &#8211; Reflections on the 30th Anniversary of The Convention on the Rights of the Child"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This just released publication is a collection of\nreflections that arose from a 2-day VUW symposium, held in August this year,\nentitled <strong>&#8220;Children&#8217;s Rights &#8211; National and International Contexts&#8221;.<\/strong> It\nwas held in recognition that it&#8217;s been 30 years since the <strong>United Nations\nConvention on the Rights of the child<\/strong> was signed, setting out the civil,\npolitical, economic, social, health and cultural rights of the child.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Children's Rights in Aotearoa New Zealand - Reflections on the 30th Anniversary of The Convention on the Rights of the Child\" target=\"_blank\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lawfoundation.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/2018_45_31_Childrens-Rights-in-Aotearoa-NZ-Collection-of-Reflections-17.12.2019-511x700-219x300-1.jpg\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The collection includes 24 articles from those who presented\nand participated at the symposium, including panel members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The symposium was attended by academics, members of the\njudiciary, public sector colleagues, NGO colleagues and postgraduate students.\nIt was structured around a series of panels, where presenters shared brief\nreflections, and had time for questions and interaction with the symposium\nparticipants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Panel members included international experts of children&#8217;s\nrights who shared their reflections on the potential of the international\nchildren&#8217;s rights framework:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Justice Vui Clarence Nelson<\/strong> &#8211; UN\nCommittee on the Rights of the Child, Justice of the Supreme Court of Samoa<\/li><li><strong>Professor Ursula Kilkelly<\/strong> &#8211;&nbsp;\nUniversity College Cork, Ireland<\/li><li><strong>Professor Laura Lundy<\/strong> &#8211; Queen&#8217;s\nUniversity Belfast, Northern Ireland<\/li><li><strong>Bruce Adamson<\/strong> &#8211;&nbsp; Children and Young\nPeople&#8217;s Commissioner, Scotland<\/li><li><strong>Judge Andrew Becroft<\/strong> &#8211;&nbsp; Children&#8217;s\ncommissioner NZ <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The symposium aimed to examine contemporary issues affecting children&#8217;s rights across four broad areas: the care system, the criminal jurisdiction, the Family Court, and the voice of the child in matters affecting them. It also aimed to build capability, opportunities for collaboration, and personal networks amongst scholars and advocates for children&#8217;s rights in New Zealand, and it was an ideal opportunity for forming international linkages and partnerships. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><h5><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawfoundation.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/2018_45_31-Childrens-Rights-Symposium_Reflections_Online-Version_rcvd-17.12.2019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Research\nreport: Children&#8217;s Rights in Aotearoa New Zealand &#8211; Reflections on the 30th\nAnniversary of The Convention on the Rights of the Child &#8211; PDF 128 pages<\/a><\/h5><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><h4>The Law Foundation provided\n$28,260 towards bringing international participants, attendance of post\ngraduate students, and publishing costs for the Symposium<\/h4><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This just released publication is a collection of reflections that arose from a 2-day VUW symposium, held in August this year, entitled &#8220;Children&#8217;s Rights &#8211; National and International Contexts&#8221;.
