The Foundation is New Zealand’s major funder of legal scholarships and achievement awards. The scholarships provide several different support options for advanced legal research, post-graduate legal study and human rights research. The awards recognise current or potential achievement for lawyers and legal academics at different levels of experience.

International Research Fellowship Te Karahipi Rangahau ? Taiao

Applications close on 1 September 2017.

This is the most prestigious of the Foundation’s awards. The International Research Fellowship is worth up to $125,000. It is awarded annually to enable in-depth legal research that will make a significant contribution to New Zealand. Anyone with the required abilities can apply, including legal practitioners, academics, judges or government officials.

Cleary Memorial Prize

Nominations close on 30 September 2017.

The Cleary Prize celebrates young lawyers who show the most promise of service to and through the profession. The $5,000 prize is open to recently-admitted barristers and/or solicitors.

Shadow Report Award

Applications close on 1 August 2017.

This award provides funding to help human rights advocates research and report on New Zealand’s compliance with its international treaty obligations. The annual award is worth up to $10,000 to help research for the preparation of a shadow report and/or attendance at the United Nations to present the report to the UN monitoring bodies for human rights treaties. Applications are open to individuals or any organisation active in human rights in New Zealand.

Doctoral Scholarship

Applications close on 31 August 2017.

This scholarship provides an additional $10,000 each year for up to three years as a ‘top up’ to the award of an NZ University PhD Scholarship. Applications are accepted twice yearly for this scholarship: 28 February and 31 August.

Ethel Benjamin Scholarship

Applications close on 1 March 2018.

This scholarship is awarded to outstanding women lawyers for post-graduate study. It is awarded annually in May each year and is worth up to $50,000.
